FORT MYERS, Fla. – Venturing out to complete a three-game sweep of in-state rival Jacksonville just hours after playing two 10 inning contests, the FGCU softball team (30-15, 11-6 A-Sun) once again proved its resiliency by coming back from a three-run deficit to beat Jacksonville 7-5 on Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex.

“I sound like a broken record as we fell behind early when Jacksonville took it to us, but our kids just did a really great job of coming back and sticking to what we were trying to do,” said head coach David Deiros.

FGCU has now won three straight games at the conclusion of the sweep of the Dolphins and the Eagles have also won six straight against Jacksonville as they now lead the all-time series 12-2 through 14 meetings.

Seeking revenge after blowing leads in both contests of Saturday’s doubleheader, Jacksonville looked to get ahead from the very start. After loading the bases, the Dolphins used a hit batter and a base on balls to bring two runs across and take a 2-0 after the top of the first inning.

With junior Tori Williams (Dunnellon, Fla./Dunnellon HS) in scoring position after having reached base, sophomore outfielder Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) came through for the Green and Blue by crushing a ball to left field for a two-run home run with two outs, tying the game 2-2 in the home half of the third.

The two sides remained in a tie ball game as both pitchers dueled with opposing batters until the start of the fifth inning. After having squandered a lead earlier in the contest, Jacksonville used three hits and an error to bring across three runs and jump out front of FGCU 5-2.

Finding themselves trailing the second time of the day, the Eagles were poised for another comeback, this time in the bottom of the fifth. A pinch hit single from Makensie McAvoy (Plant City, Fla./Plant City HS) led off the half inning for FGCU and a pair of walks followed to load the bases with one out. With a two-run long bomb already under her belt from earlier in the game, Carpenter stepped into the batter’s box and used a Jacksonville fielding blunder to reach second base while driving in two runs and advancing a base runner to third base.

Proving that no lead is too insurmountable for the FGCU offense, Emily Lanier (St. Cloud, Fla./Harmony HS) dug in with runners on second and third as the Eagles trailed 5-4. After failing to collect a hit in her earlier at bats, Lanier stood tall and put bat on ball for a three-run home run that took FGCU from being behind, to leading 7-5.

Junior Amanda Josie (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) entered in relief of starting pitcher Jackie Owen (Cape Coral, Fla./Daytona State College) in the fourth inning. After allowing Dolphin runners to reach base early in her outing, Josie settled down to keep Jacksonville from creating a true offensive threat to collect the victory in 3.2 innings of work and secure the 7-5 win for the Green and Blue.

The Eagles will retake the field at the FGCU Softball Complex on Saturday, April 20 for a doubleheader with No. 24 USC Upstate that will begin at 2 p.m.
