FORT MYERS, Fla. – After sweeping a pair of road games at ETSU to stay atop the A-Sun standings, the FGCU softball team (24-9, 5-0 A-Sun) will return home to take on Lipscomb in a three-game series that will begin on Friday, March 29 and conclude on Saturday, March 30 at the FGCU Softball Complex.
FGCU holds a slim advantage in the 10 all-time meetings between the two programs as the Eagles have won six of those. The last time the two teams squared off was on April 6, 2012 when FGCU and Lipscomb split a twin billing at Draper Diamond in Nashville, Tenn. with the Eagles taking game one 1-0 before falling 14-5 in five innings in the second game.
Lipscomb (14-16, 3-6 A-Sun) will look to get back on track after having dropped two of three games their last time out when they took on North Florida. After a 35-20 record in 2012 with an 11-7 mark in league play, the Bisons are focused on improving in any way that they can.
The Bisons will put their 4-6 road record on the line at a place where the hosts have posted a 14-3 record so far this season with the Eagles currently in the midst of an 11-game win streak at the FGCU Softball Complex.
Lipscomb was tabbed to finish fourth in the 2013 A-Sun Preseason Coaches’ Poll after finishing fourth in the league in 2012. Senior infielder Kelsey Cartwright was a Preseason All-Conference first team selection at her position and through 29 games Cartwright is proving her worth. The senior leads the team with a .378 batting average, a .500 on-base percentage and a .800 slugging percentage to power the offense.
As of late, lead-off hitter Tori Williams (Dunnellon, Fla./Dunnellon HS) has been efficient from the batter’s box as she now leads all FGCU hitters with a .394 batting average and a team-best .524 on-base percentage.
“The best part of this team is their resiliency, their determination to never back down from a battle,” said assistant coach Alycia Bachkora. “They truly believe that as long as they have a bat in their hands, the game is never over.”
If any of the contests go past the seven regulation innings, the Eagles should enter extra innings with confidence as FGCU has won its last four extra inning contests, all of which have occurred over an eight-game span that stretched from March 16 through March 23.
“That is the mindset we have been trying to instill all year and it is amazing to watch them fully buy into it,” Bachkora explained. “If they continue to believe in their teammates, themselves and this team then we will come out of this tough weekend in a very favorable position.”
With only A-Sun action remaining for the rest of the regular season, FGCU will look to focus in on the conference crown as they look to repeat after winning the regular season and conference championships in 2012.
