FORT MYERS, Fla. – After traveling to Nashville, Tenn. to begin Atlantic Sun action this weekend, the FGCU softball team will host a mid-week double header with two ACC foes on Wednesday, March 12 at the FGCU Softball Complex.  The Eagles will take on Virginia Tech at 4:45 p.m. and will face Florida State at 7 p.m.

FGCU began conference play with a 1-2 record at Lipscomb this weekend to move to 13-10-1 on the season.

Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) has consistently led the Eagles this season and currently tops the roster with a batting average of .478 to rank 27th in the nation.  Carpenter holds a perfect fielding percentage in left field and paces the team with four homeruns and 22 RBI through 24 games.  Carpenter has also added seven doubles.

Louie Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker High School) adds an average of .333 for FGCU with 19 hits in 57 at bats. Ross has also hit four homeruns over the fence and has knocked in 17 RBI.  Jessica Barnes (Winter Haven, Fla./Haines City High School) has hit .298 through 21 games this year with 23 runs scored, three homeruns and five other extra-base hits.

The FGCU pitching staff is led by Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) who maintains an ERA of 2.54 and holds a record of 5-2 from the circle.  Morgan has allowed just 15 earned runs through 41.1 innings of work.  She’s let up 42 hits, while striking out 20 batters.  The pitching staff holds a collective ERA of 3.16 and has struck out 65 batters and held opponents to an average of .288.

Offensively, the team has held a combined average of .279 and has outscored opponents 113-88.


Virginia Tech travels to Fort Myers with a record with 10-9 after defeating Michigan State but falling to Hofstra last weekend.  The Hokies are led by freshman Vanessa Gonzalez and redshirt sophomore Katey Smith.  Gonzalez has 36 at bats, 14 hits, two homeruns and six RBI for a batting average of .386 through 19 games.  Smith holds a batting average .296 with 14 hits in 42 at bats, while Kyle McGoldrick adds to the Hokie offense with an average of .352.

From the circle the Hokies are led by sophomores Maggie Tyler and Kelly Heinz.  Tyler has a record of 4-2, with 37 strike outs for a 3.32 ERA, while Heinz has a record of 4-5, with 45 strike outs and an ERA of 4.08.

Virginia Tech is led by head coach Scot Thomas who is in his 19th year with the Hokies. 


Florida State has started the 2014 season strong and holds a record of 20-3 after recently take a three-game series against Virginia with two wins and splitting a double-header with no. 11 Alabama. 

The Seminole bats are led by redshirt junior Maddie O’Brien and redshirt senior Tiffani Brown.  O’Brien has 56 appearances at the plate with 24 hits for an average of .40.  She has added nine homeruns and a team-high 31 RBI and holds a slugging percentage of 1.015.  Brown adds an average of .359 with 28 hits in 78 at bats.  She has produced five extra-base hits with nine RBI.

FSU’s pitching staff is led by junior Lacey Waldrop and redshirt freshman Jessica Burroughs.  Waldrop has a record of 10-2, with 86 strike outs and an ERA of 0.59.  Burroughs holds a record of 8-0 with 34 strike outs and a 1.35 ERA through 41.1 innings.

Florida State is led by head coach Lonni Alameda who is in her sixth season with the Seminoles.


Following the nonconference matchup, the Eagles will host ETSU in a three-game Atlantic Sun series this weekend.  FGCU will host the Buccaneers for two games on Saturday and will conclude the series with one game on Sunday.
