NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After falling in two games on Saturday, the FGCU softball team responded with a 5-3 win over Lipscomb on Sunday afternoon to begin conference play with a record of 1-2.  The Eagles move to 13-10-1 on the year, while the Bisons fall to 19-4.

The Eagles produced nine hits and five runs collectively, while holding the Bisons to just three runs, all in one inning.

“It was our players’ turn to come up with big hits, catches and pitches today,” said head coach Dave Deiros.  “It was an overall effort and a great team win.”

After a scoreless first inning, Brittney Garabedian (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep High School) began the second with a single to center field and moved to second when Hannah Horwath (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary High School) singled to left field as the next batter.  Rookie Jeanie Verderese (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside High School) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners before Regan Knapik (Land O’Lakes, Fla./Wiregrass High School) singled to left field to drive in Garabedian.  After two innings, the Eagles held a 1-0 lead.

The Bisons recorded one hit in the bottom of the second and the third but were unable to match the score.

Knapik singled to the shortstop to put a runner on first in the top of the fourth before Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) followed with a single to left field. With runners on first and second Mackenzie McAvoy (Plant City, Fla./Plant City High School) drew an eight-pitch walk to load the bases with just one out for Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice High School).  Zgrabik knocked the first pitch deep for a grand slam to score all base runners and put the Eagles ahead 5-0.  The homer was Zgrabik’s third of the season.  After four innings the Eagles held a 5-0 lead.

Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth before the Bisons got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth.  Lipscomb put two runners on base with a walk and a double to left-center field before a homerun gave the home team three runs on the afternoon.

After the homerun, Shelby Morgan (High Springs, Fla./Sante Fe High School) entered the circle in relief of Jackie Owen  (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers High School).  Morgan forced a fly out to end the sixth and retired the batters in order in the seventh to seal the win for FGCU.

Owen was credited with the win as she allowed just three runs to score on nine hits through 5.2 innings.  Morgan picked up her first save of the season by allowing no runs on no hits in 1.1 innings.

The Eagles will return to Fort Myers for a midweek double header with Florida State University and Virginia Tech.  The Eagles will take on Virginia Tech at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12 and will follow with a game against FSU at 7 p.m.
