FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU softball team will return to the FGCU Softball Complex to host the 2014 FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Round Robin Friday, Feb. 21 through Sunday, Feb. 23.  The tournament will include Arkansas, Eastern Michigan, Harvard, North Dakota and Villanova with 15 total games played on campus.

The tournament will mark the start of the 2014 season for Villanova, North Dakota and Harvard. 


FGCU will begin the tournament Friday when the Eagles take on Villanova at 6:00 p.m.  The Wildcats ended the 2013 season 21-31 and 3-19 in conference.  From the plate Villanova will be returning Ali Lowe with a batting average of .304 and Shea Palmer who hit .296 last season. From the mound the Wildcats return Kaity Sitzman with an ERA of 2.46 and Kate Poppe with an ERA of 2.56 and 256 strikeouts in 237 innings last season.  The team is led by head coach Maria DiBernardi and assisted by Sheri Donley and Jessica Vetock.

The Eagles will continue the action following its first game at 8:15 p.m. with North Dakota University.  North Dakota ended the 2013 season with a record of 10-30.  The team is led by sluggers D Jantzer with a .308 average and Caralyn Chewing with an average of .297.  Chewing also returns to the circle after maintain an ERA of 4.85 last season.  The pitching staff will also bring on two freshmen in Sophie Pratt and Megan Hedstrom.  North Dakota is led by head coach Eric Oakley and assisted by Amanda Montalto and Jessica Richards.

Saturday afternoon the Green and Blue will take on Arkansas at 3:45 p.m.  The 7-3 Razorbacks are led by hitters Jayme Gee and Kasey Fagan.  Leading the pitching staff is Grace Moll with a 2.00 ERA and Kimmy Beasley with an ERA of 2.85.  The Razorbacks are led by head coach Mike Larabee and assisted by Coy Adkins and Sue Carpenter.

Later that night FGCU will face Harvard at 8:15p.m. to finish Saturday’s competition.  The team returns sluggers Shelby Olson and Kasey Lange from a team that went 22-22 last season.  From the circle, Harvard will return Morgan Groom who held an ERA of 2.58 and Gabrielle Ruiz with an ERA of 5.02 during the 2013 season.  Harvard is led by head coach Jenny Allard in her 19th season.  Allard is assisted by Ashley Waters and Becca Carden. 

The Eagles will conclude the three-day event Sunday afternoon when they face Eastern Michigan at 1:30 p.m.  The Eastern Michigan Eagles are 2-2 for the 2014 season with wins over Virginia and North Carolina Central in A-Sun favorite USC Upstate’s tournament last weekend.  Leading the Eagles from the plate is Lindsay Rich with an average of .375 and one homerun in four games.  Aoife Duffy adds a mark of .500 in eight at bats. Leading the pitching staff is Abbie Minsker with an ERA of 2.63 and Rich with an ERA of 3.00.  Eastern Michigan is led by head coach Melissa Gentile and assisted by Kim Burke and Courtney Pruner. 


After beginning the season with an impressive mark of 5-0-1, the Eagles traveled to the FIU Tournament last weekend.  The team went 1-4 for the tournament to fall to 6-4-1 on the season. 

FGCU maintains a team batting average of .267 and has scored 42 runs, compared to their opponents’ mark of .282 with 43 runs scored.  The Eagles hold a team slugging percentage of .451.

Last weekend the Green and Blue were led by junior Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty High School) who went 6-14 from the plate for a .429 average.  Carpenter recorded two runs, one home run, five RBI and 10 total bases for a slugging percentage of .714.

Jackie Owen  (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers High School) led the Eagles from the circle with three runs, 10 hits allowed, six strikeouts and a 3.00 ERA on the weekend.

Overall on the season Carpenter leads the team with 30 at bats, 16 hits, four doubles, three home runs and 11 RBI for a .967 slugging percentage.  She is the only Eagle with double-digit hits and RBI and leads the team with three shots out of the park and holds a team-high batting average of .533.

Louie Ross (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker High School) adds an average of .292 for FGCU with four hits in 10 games played.  Ross has hit two homeruns and knocked in seven RBI.

From the circle, freshman Taylor Wade (Pace, Fla./Pace High School) leads with 19.2 innings pitched in five appearances. Wade has struck out three batters and holds an ERA of 2.49 and a record of 1-1. 


The FGCU/Four Points Sheraton Round Robin will get underway Friday at 9 a.m. as Harvard takes on Eastern Michigan.  The tournament will feature six games on Friday, six games on Saturday and three games on Sunday for a total of 15 contests, all at the FGCU Softball Complex.
