FORT MYERS, Fla. – After taking two of three from Mercer to win the series and get back on track, the FGCU softball team will remain in the state of Georgia to take on Kennesaw State in a trio of mid-week contests as the Eagles will look to climb back to the top of the Atlantic Sun standings on Tuesday, April 9 and Wednesday, April 10 at Bailey Softball Complex.

The first two games of the series will be played in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 9 with the first game set to begin at 3 p.m. and the second game to follow the conclusion of the first. Game three of the set will take place at 3 pm. on Wednesday, April 10.

The matchup will be a rematch of the 2012 Atlantic Sun Tournament Championship game in which FGCU defeated Kennesaw State 8-0 in six innings on its way to the A-Sun tournament title and an automatic berth in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

FGCU is currently 26-13 overall in 2013 with a 7-4 record against A-Sun competition as the Eagles are currently on a two-game winning streak. Kennesaw State sits at 24-13 this season with the Owls having compiled an 8-7 record in conference play after most recently having dropped two of three contests to North Florida.

After the three-game series with Mercer, senior Mariah Fernandez (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers HS) continued to be an elusive out for opposing defenses as she extended her streak of consecutive games reaching base to 15, with the streak having begun on March 13 against Maine.

Preseason A-Sun Player of the Year Chelsea Zgrabik (Venice, Fla./Venice HS) continued her offensive tear during the three-game series at Mercer by recording two home runs and five RBI to account for a 1.000 slugging percentage. The junior catcher now leads the conference in slugging percentage (.818), RBI (52), home runs (14) and is tied for first in total bases (90).

Kennesaw State is expected to put junior Amanda Henderson in the circle for as long as she can go against the Eagles as the righty has been named A-Sun Pitcher of the Week three times (Feb. 11, Feb. 18 and Mar. 18) this season while boasting a 1.03 ERA with a 14-2 record through 122.2 innings pitched.

The Owls will work to keep FGCU runners off of the base paths by collecting a multitude of strikeouts just as they have done all season with Kennesaw State ranking first in the A-Sun in batters struck out (265) and batters struck out looking (86).

The Eagles have excelled this season when it comes to extra-base hits as the Green and Blue are tied for third in the A-Sun in doubles (49), first in triples (13) and third in home runs (40). The big hits have brought a boost to the offensive firepower that FGCU has used to win several games thus far in 2013.

One of the aspects of the matchup to watch between Henderson and the FGCU hitters is whether any Eagles will be able to record a triple in any of the three games as Henderson is one of four pitchers in the A-Sun yet to have allowed a triple this season.

The Eagles and Owls have met a total of 11 times in the history between the two teams, with FGCU leading 9-2. The last regular season meeting between the two squads was a doubleheader on March 7, 2012 that FGCU and Kennesaw State split.
