Ornberg, Renegar, Fournet & Leon Named @FGCUEagles Scholar-Athletes of the Month

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Department of Athletics has announced its monthly academic honorees for April and May. Women's tennis player Maja Ornberg and men's golfer Grant Renegar were named Scholar-Athletes for the month of April, while softball's Racquel Fournet and baseball's Mario Leon earned the honor for May.

A female and male Eagle is chosen as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month throughout the academic year. Factors in the selection for this honor is based on a combination of significant athletic and overall academic success.

Ornberg (Kil, Sweden/De la Gardiegymnasiet, Lidkoping) boasts a 3.74 GPA while majoring in Communications and capped off her spring semester landing a spot on the Dean's List.

The 2018 ASUN Player of the Year turned in a stellar season, dominating the entirety of the spring campaign on court #1 (12-1) and was one of three Eagles to turn in double-digit wins as she went 15-3 (19-12 overall) in dual action and posted a 6-0 mark in ASUN play. The sophomore teamed up with Julia Ascúa (Santa Fe, Argentina/Domingo G. Silva) to collect four doubles wins on court #1 in the process of aiding the Green and Blue to its second-straight ASUN regular season title.

Renegar (McComb, Miss./Meridian CC/Parklane Academy) currently carries a 3.50 GPA and is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Integrated Studies. His work in the classroom this spring earned him a spot on the Dean's List.

The senior was one of only three players to compete in all 11 tournaments for the Eagles, finishing with a team-best stroke average of 74 over the course of 29 rounds. His 10 par-or-better rounds were tied for the 14th-most in single-season program history, and he posted four top-10 finishes on the year. Two of those top-10 showings came in April as he finished tied for 5th out of 68 competitors at the Geiberger Invitational in California with rounds of 72-68-73 and tied for 7th at the ASUN Championship after a 75-68 performance. Those pair of 4-under 68 rounds were tied for his lowest of the year.

Fournet (Windermere, Fla./Windermere Preparatory School) is a Biology major with a 3.55 GPA and a three-time Dean's List recipient.

A two-time ASUN All-Academic honoree, junior Fournet was named an all-conference selection for a third-consecutive year after being tabbed a First Team pick earlier this month for the second time in her career. Fournet notched a start in all 56 games for the Green and Blue, leading the squad in batting average (.361), hits (60), doubles (14) and RBI (33). The Windermere native earned ASUN Player of the Week plaudits twice during the spring, giving FGCU a total of six such honors this season.

Leon (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast HS) carries a 4.0 GPA while pursuing a master's in Public Administration. The right-hander was selected to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of his eight undergraduate semesters.

Earlier this spring, Leon was named the department's co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year and took home the same honor for ASUN baseball just over a week ago, becoming the first-ever Eagle in the baseball's program history to earn the accolade. In addition to his classroom accolades, Leon statistically had his best season wearing the Green and Blue. The Naples native matched his career high with five wins while lowering his career-best single-season ERA a full point to 3.05. In addition, his 83 strikeouts were nearly 20 more than his previous high.
