The Eagles' 2017 schedule includes 22 games against a total of eight 2016 NCAA Tournament teams. Of those eight opponents, six were either #1 or #2 seeds in their respective NCAA Regional fields. Florida, Miami and FSU each hosted and were the top seed in their respective regional tournaments, while Ohio State, UNC Wilmington and FAU entered the postseason as #2 seeds.
Â
Twenty-six of FGCU's first 30 games will be contested in Southwest Florida, with 24 games scheduled to be played at Swanson Stadium along with the two games at JetBlue Park. Additionally, from Feb. 24 through Mar. 15, the Eagles are scheduled to play 13 consecutive games against five of the aforementioned teams coming off NCAA Tournament participation.
Â
Coming off its first appearance in the ASUN Championship Game a season ago, the Green and Blue return a crop of talented and experienced players that will look to blend with one of the largest and most talented incoming classes in program history.
Â
Preseason All-Conference honoree and 2015 Louisville Slugger All-American
Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS), who missed all but 17 games last season with a wrist injury, will look to spearhead an FGCU offense that appears primed to rank among the ASUN's best. With ASUN All-Tournament Team performer
Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County HS) and ASUN All-Freshman Team member
Jake Smith (Windermere, Fla./Windermere Prep) likely serving as offensive table setters, Rivera will likely join junior college transfers
Eli Lovell (Lincoln, Neb./Kansas City Kansas CC/Lincoln Southwest HS) and
Spencer Levine (Miami, Fla./Seminole State College/Miami Killian Senior HS) to provide the power in the middle of the FGCU order.
Â
On the mound, a trio of upperclassmen including ASUN All-Tournament Team member
Garrett AndersonÂ
(Arcadia, Fla,/DeSoto County HS),
Mario LeonÂ
(Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast HS)Â and
Sterling KoernerÂ
(Fort Pierce, Fla./John Carroll HS)Â will be counted on to provide experienced leadership for another relatively young FGCU staff. Additionally, the return of
Kenton HeringÂ
(Melbourne, Fla./Eastern Florida State/Viera HS), who was arguably the Eagles' best pitcher at the end of last season, lanky southpaw
Josh DyeÂ
(DeLand, Fla./DeLand HS), who missed all of last season with an injury, and the addition of junior college transferÂ
Kutter Crawford (Okeechobee, Fla./Indian River State/Okeechobee HS)Â will likely play a major factor on this year's staff.
