FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Department of Athletics has announced its monthly academic honorees for August and September. Women's soccer's
Lindsey Patton and baseball's
Mario Leon were named the Scholar-Athletes of the Month for August, while volleyball's
Amanda Carroll and men's soccer's
Miguel Jaime earned the honor for September.
Each month during the school year, the FGCU Athletics Communication Office and Athletic Academic staff will choose a pair of Eagles – one male and one female – as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athletes of the Month. Those selected for the honor will have exhibited a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.
Patton (Jacksonville, Fla./Oakleaf HS) currently carries a 3.97 GPA while majoring in Athletic Training. During her first year at FGCU, Patton was named to the Dean's List and President's List while also earning a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
After playing in all but 12 minutes last season, Patton has once again become a reliable member of the FGCU defense. A top-100 freshman according to Top Drawer Soccer last season, Patton was named the ASUN Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career to start the 2017 season after scoring a goal against #4 South Carolina. The Jacksonville native has helped FGCU post eight clean sheets this season while the Eagles currently boast an ASUN-best 0.61 goals-against average.
Leon (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast HS) is currently pursuing a Master's degree and has one more season of eligibility after graduating with a 3.83 GPA and a Communications degree. He has served two years as the Eagles Council President, and spent the last three years serving as FGCU's ASUN SAAC representative.
On the mound for the Eagles last season, he served mostly as the mid-week starter and earned wins against the eventual National Champion Florida Gators, #21 USF and Miami. He was called upon to pitch in the ASUN Tournament and matched his career high with 10 strikeouts over 6.2 innings in FGCU's 6-5 win over Kennesaw State. He also picked up the Eagles' first-ever win in the NCAA Tournament, tossing 2.1 innings out of the bullpen in FGCU's 10-6 win over Michigan.
Carroll (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) earned Academic All-ASUN honors last season while posting a 3.85 GPA and majoring in Communications. In addition, Carroll was invited to the Academic Honors Luncheon last spring after earning Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of her first four semesters.
Carroll's success on the court was highlighted recently when she became FGCU's all-time leader in kills (1,174), passing USA Olympian Brooke Youngquist. The junior was named the ASUN's Player of the Week for the fourth time in her career for her record-breaking performance. The outside hitter is coming off a unanimous First Team All-Conference selection last year, as well as becoming the first AVCA All-Southeast Region Honorable Mention selection in program history.
Jaime (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) is a Forensic Studies major with a 3.48 GPA. He was named to the ASUN All-Academic Team in both his sophomore and junior seasons, becoming just the second two-time honoree in the program's history (Rodrigo Saravia). Additionally, Jaime is a two-time Dean's List member and has earned Athletic Director's Honor Roll distinction five times.
The Denver native has tallied two assists this season for the Eagles, including one in a win over then-#24 Omaha to begin October. The midfielder has scored four goals in his career while assisting on eight more. Furthermore, Jaime has been named to the ASUN All-Freshman Team, Second Team and All-Tournament Team during his career.
IRMA RELIEF DONATIONS
In the wake of Hurricane Irma, many individuals and families throughout Southwest Florida are still in desperate need of assistance. To aid in those relief efforts, FGCU Athletics will be collecting donations at all Eagle home games for the immediate future. Donation items most needed include: non-perishable food, clothing, household items and first-aid supplies. Additionally, those unable to attend upcoming home games can drop off donations in canisters located in the Alico Arena lobby. All donations will be given to those hardest hit in Lee and Collier counties.
