FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU Athletics has named softball player
Kelsey Carpenter (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) and men's golfer
Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) as recipients of the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athletes of the Month Award for the month of March.
Each month during the school year, the FGCU Athletics Communications Office and Athletic Academic staff will choose a pair of Eagles as the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athlete of the Month. Those selected for the honor will have exhibited a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.
Carpenter is an exercise science major and has held a 3.94 GPA while being a two-time recipient of the Robert and Bette Batson Scholarship, which only two students receive in the Exercise Science program. Last month she became one of just six student-athletes in the history of FGCU to be selected as a member of the 2015 FGCU Hall of Fame class. The last two years Carpenter has been the captain of the softball team and also became the founding president of FGCU's Fellowship of Christian Athletes. While maintaining a spot on the President's List or Dean's List every semester, Carpenter has volunteered 60 hours each for Habitat for Humanity and Summit Student Ministries.
This season, the senior is the only player to start all 42 of the Eagles' games while batting .345 in 119 at bats. She leads the Green and Blue with 41 hits, a .538 slugging percentage, 64 total bases, 17 walks and 27 RBI. She is also the only Eagle with more than 50 putouts to not record an error. She is also a two-time All-Conference selection and was tabbed the 2015 A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year.
Sherwin is a communication major that has maintained a 3.38 GPA in his three years at FGCU with a pair of Dean's List selections. The junior posted rounds of 70-70-71 at The Fountains Country Club to finish at 2-under par for the tournament – his third-straight even-par or better tournament finish this spring to earn A-Sun Men's Golfer of the Week honors. His 211 total was just three shy of claiming medalist honors from a field of 20 teams and 113 players.
Heading into the spring portion of the campaign, the Florida native continued to be a showstopper, recording scores of 67 (-4) and 68 (-3) in the first two rounds of the Talis Park Challenge to tie for 10th before finishing tied for 6th at the Grub Mart Intercollegiate. Seven of Sherwin's nine rounds this spring have been played at even par or better, leading him to top-10 finishes in all three events.
In total, Sherwin has finished in the top 15 in six of his seven tournaments this year, including four-straight top-10 finishes dating back to the end of the fall season in October. Sherwin easily leads the Eagles with a 72.81 scoring average for the season.
