DUNK CITY, Fla. – The FGCU men's basketball team has added combo guard
Jonathan Milligan as the junior college transfer has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Eagles for the 2015-16 season. The 6-2 Milligan will have two years of eligibility beginning immediately.
Milligan averaged 14.3 points per game as a sophomore at Kilgore College (Texas) this past season, but increased that average to 17.5 during the team's 19 conference games. He also added 3.7 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game while shooting 79.1 percent (125-158) from the free-throw line to rank fifth in the entire league.
A Region XIV All-Conference First Team and All-Region First Team member this past season, Milligan helped guide Kilgore to a 21-9 overall mark and 13-6 showing in the league. Milligan led the Region XIV Conference in total minutes (1,045) and minutes per game (34.8) last year, and logged an incredible 39.6 minutes per game in league action.
"We're excited about Jonathan joining the program," stated FGCU head coach
Joe Dooley. "He's an excellent prospect who will definitely help fill the need in the backcourt, especially at the point guard position. His leadership will be greatly needed."
Not only did Milligan score a lot during the 2014-15 campaign, he did so efficiently as he connected at a 48.3-percent clip from the floor (130-269), and like most of his other stats that increased in conference play to 49.3 percent (99-201). A weapon from long range as well, Milligan shot 40.2 percent (45-112) from 3-point range for Kilgore, two-time national champions.
Milligan's best game of the year came in a 68-65 win over Bossier Parrish as he scored 35 points on 8-16 from the floor, 5-10 from 3-point range and a formidable 14-15 from the free-throw line.
"I love the tradition that is being built at FGCU and I want to be a part of it," Milligan excitedly added. "I believe that they can continue to win, and that's what I'm all about – winning. I'm looking forward to getting to campus and getting to work."
A native of Orlando, Milligan was ranked as the No. 5 point guard in the state and 25th-best in the nation by ESPN coming out of Word of God Christian Academy. Additionally, Max Preps tabbed him as top-100 prospect nationally in the Class of 2012.
Milligan played for head coach Brian Hoberecht at Kilgore, the same program which produced Ole Miss guard Stefan Moody. Moody was teammates with Milligan in 2013-14, and he went on to be named to the SEC First Team this year after averaging 16.6 points per game.
FGCU finished 22-11 (11-3 Atlantic Sun Conference) last year as the Eagles are one of less than 50 programs in the nation that have claimed at least 20 wins in each of the past three seasons. The Green and Blue made its third-different postseason appearance in only four years of eligibility in 2014-15 as it hosted a CIT (CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament) contest after going to the NIT in 2014 and Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
