FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU Athletics has named volleyball player Olivia Mesner (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River High School) and men's soccer player Henry Penagos (Margate, Fla./American Heritage School of Boca/Delray) as recipients of the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athletes of the Month Award for the month of October.

Each month during the school year, the FGCU Athletics Communications Office and Athletic Academic staff will choose a pair of Eagles as the Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athlete of the Month. Those selected for the honor will have exhibited a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.
Mesner is a senior majoring in resort and hospitality management and has logged a 3.33 GPA during her time in Green and Blue. She has also been named to the Dean's List two times. As the volleyball team's middle blocker, Mesner has served as the team's primary attacker and blocker, leading the team in kills (335) and total blocks (73) on the year and has led the team to a 17-9 record with a 10-2 mark in Atlantic Sun play. Early this year, Mesner became the all-time career leader for solo blocks against Ohio State.

She recently produced 14 kills, one block-assist and one solo block in a 3-0 rout against A-Sun foe USC Upstate.
Penagos is a redshirt-senior psychology major with a minor of biology and has produced a 2.98 GPA during his time at FGCU. He has also been named to the Dean's list one time. The Margate native started the season slow, but turned his campaign around in October as he tallied all four of his goals in a seven-game stretch, including two game-winning goals against Jacksonville and FAU. Recently Penagos received an A-Sun All-Conference Second Team selection for his outstanding performance on the field.
