MACON, Ga. – For the second time this season, No. 66 Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) was named Atlantic Sun Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.
The honor comes as a result of Vives’ wins in the one singles slot against No. 74 USF and Bethune-Cookman to extend his nation-leading win streak to 14. The Barcelona native beat USF’s Oliver Pramming 6-5 (3), 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) and B-CU’s Santiago Lobelo 6-0, 6-2. Vives’ win over Lobelo was the 40th of his career at FGCU, a tremendous accomplishment as this is just his second season with the Eagles.
Currently sitting at 19-2 on the season, Vives has not suffered an individual singles loss in 115 days. Becoming FGCU’s first nationally ranked D-I player, Vives debuted at No. 66 when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its opening wave of rankings on Jan. 2.
A unanimous selection to the 2013 A-Sun All Conference First Team, this marks Vives’ third weekly honor and the program’s seventh all-time. Vives picked up his first Player of the Week recognition this season on Jan. 22 after back-to-back wins over No. 36 Florida State and No. 60 Nebraska in the No. 1 singles slot. After sweeping No. 1 singles matches versus UCF and UConn, he was named Player of the Week for the inaugural time in his career on Feb. 20, 2013.
The Eagles return to the court to host Auburn in a dual match under the lights of the FGCU Tennis Complex on Friday, Feb. 7 at 5 p.m.
