Sophomore adds to impressive first season in Green & Blue
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – FGCU men’s tennis sophomore Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) added to his list of postseason accolades on Sunday following the Atlantic Sun Championship, as he was named to the All-Tournament team.
Making his first appearance at the A-Sun Championship, Vives made a grand entrance into league postseason play by taking down A-Sun Player of the Year Matthias Kidler of USC Upstate in straight sets. Vives’ snapped Kidler’s 11-match win streak and propelled FGCU to its first-ever A-Sun postseason win over the Spartans with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at top singles.
“Again, I'm proud of Jordi for this recognition,” said head coach C.J. Weber. “Jordi beat the Conference Player of the Year in this tournament and did a great job of leading this team with not only his play, but also his support and encouragement of his teammates. Jordi has a great future ahead of him at FGCU!”
Vives won the first set of his semifinal match against UNF, but didn’t get to finish before the match-clinching fourth point. A unanimous choice to the A-Sun All-Conference first team and an Academic All-Conference selection, Vives finished his first season in the Green and Blue with a 13-5 singles mark, all coming at the top spot.
FGCU finished its second year under Weber with an 11-11 mark, setting a new program D-I record for wins in a season.
