ATHENS, Ga. – After rain interrupted some of Saturday’s singles action and all of doubles play, the FGCU men’s tennis team completed its fall-opening performance at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia with a trio of singles wins and a doubles squad that advanced to the Round of 16 in the Division II Tournament.

Over the three days, FGCU picked up six singles wins and a pair of doubles triumphs from the combo of senior Colin Brown (Victoria, Texas/Memorial HS) and sophomore Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS). Included in the eight total victories was a win over Georgia Tech in doubles play and Vanderbilt in singles.

After coming out of the play-in match in Division II Doubles and following with another win just hours later on Friday, Brown and Beiler’s run ended in the Round of 16 against Armstrong Atlantic’s combo of Jaan Kononov and Pedro Scocuglia, who advanced all the way to the semifinals, but had to withdraw due to Kononov playing in the Division II singles semifinals. Brown and Beiler defeated Oliver Strecker and John Tougher of Lipscomb, 9-8(7), in the play-in match and Georgia Tech’s Colin Edwards and Anish Sharma, 9-7, in the opening round.

The team’s second win over a BCS conference foe came in single action where sophomore Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) opened his FGCU career with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 victory against Jeff Offerdahl of Vanderbilt. A transfer from 2012 National Champ USC, Vives returned to the court on Saturday, but fell in the second round of the Division I bracket to nationally-ranked Jonas Lutjen of Ole Miss, 6-2, 6-2. Lutjen entered the weekend ranked No. 21 in the nation and went on to win the Division I bracket easily, conceding just seven points over the semifinals and championship.

Junior Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) accounted for two of FGCU’s six singles wins, as the Lexington, Ky. product advanced through the field of 64 in the Division II bracket all the way to the Round of 16. Tsamas followed Friday’s first round straight-set win over Matthew Johnson of Kennesaw State with a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Mercer’s Anderson Scarpa. Tsamas fell in the Round of 16 in a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 loss to Ole Miss’ Zach Wilder.

The final three singles wins came in the Division II singles tournament where sophomore Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS), redshirt junior Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/Gimnasio Calibio) and junior Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./ Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) bounced back from a loss on Friday with a consolation victory. Beiler added to his two doubles wins with an emphatic 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jorge Azuero of Liberty. Echeverry and Lvovsky’s wins came over fellow A-Sun opponents, as Echeverry took down Mercer’s Arsav Mohanty, 6-2, 6-3, while Lvovsky earned a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Bernardo Craveiro of North Florida.

FGCU will be back in action next weekend when it takes part in the Beford Cup hosted by Florida in Gainesville. Get updates of all the action twitter by following @FGCUMensTennis while a full recap of each day can be found on www.FGCUATHLETICS.com.
