Men's Tennis Sweeps Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 7-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s tennis team won the doubles point and won all six singles matches to blank Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 7-0, on Wednesday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

FGCU improves to 4-3 (1-0 A-Sun) on the season and SIUE falls to 2-6. The Eagles complete their first sweep since 2008 against Colgate.

“Today was a great win for the program,” said first-year head coach C.J. Weber. “We showed a lot of resiliency as a team overall, winning three third-set matches.”

The Green and Blue took two of the three doubles matches to claim a 1-0 lead in the match. At No. 2 doubles, freshman Tianyu Bao (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS) and junior Jackson Moore (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS/Georgia State) defeated Dylan Reed and Morten Christensen, 8-3. The Eagles clinched the point as the team of junior Collin Brown (Victoria, Texas/Memorial HS) and sophomore Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) took down Gary Dias and Stephen Washuta, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles.

In the final doubles match, Senior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale HS/Jacksonville) and sophomore Lance Lvovsky (Dania,Fla./Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) fell to Jacob Tanulanond and Marten Jonsson, 8-5.

In singles, Moore gave the Eagles a 2-0 advantage after a straight sets win against Christensen, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles and improves to 4-2 in dual matches.

“It feels great to win a match at every position,” said Moore. “We had some close matches, but everyone fought for every point and today we proved to be the stronger team both physically and mentally.”

FGCU continued to cruise as Lvovsky picked up a victory at No. 5 singles against Tanulanond, 7-5, 6-0, to earn his fifth dual match win of the season. Bao clinched the win with a straight sets against Jonsson, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), at No. 1 singles. Bao has won two-straight dual matches to improve his record to 4-3.

The Green and Blue fell behind in the last three matches but were able to pull off three comeback wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Freshman Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) won his second-straight match with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, victory against Washuta, at No. 6 singles.

Tsamas lost the first set against Vincent, 3-6, before winning the next two sets, 6-1, 7-5, for his team-leading sixth victory of the season. In the final match, Rock also lost the first set against Faulkenberg, 3-6, before winning the next two sets, 6-4, 6-4, to win his second-straight dual match at No. 4 singles.

The Green and Blue welcome No. 70 Penn to the FGCU Tennis Complex on March 9 at 9 a.m.
