FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU men’s tennis head coach C.J. Weber recently got a chance to train professional tennis player Kevin Anderson, who is currently ranked No. 32 in the world and is the highest ranked player in his native country of South Africa, at the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla. during the holidays.
Weber coached Anderson at the University of Illinois during his sophomore season in 2006, where he was a three-time All-American in singles and two-time All-American in doubles.
Anderson is training for the 2012 Australian Open and has been ranked as high as No. 30 in the world since turning professional in 2007.
“It has been great for me working with CJ over this very important period. His knowledge of the game has helped me identify and improve the areas of my game that I am working on,” said Anderson. “Additionally, his passion and enthusiasm has made the long hours spent on the court and in the gym fun and exciting. He is the type of coach I want to be around.”
Weber has been working with Anderson since Dec. 14 with workouts consisting primarily of individual time, fine tuning skills, coupled with point play with other pros training at IMG Academies like Kei Nishikori (No. 25 ATP), Santiago Giraldo (No. 55 ATP) and Alejandro Falla (No. 74 ATP). “It was an honor to be asked to work with Kevin during this off season to help prepare him for the upcoming tour in Australia,” said Weber. “Kevin has the reputation of being one of the hardest workers on tour, and being here with him this past week has confirmed just that. It's an incredible opportunity working with somebody who is so determined and motivated to get better, and it's been a lot of fun seeing a good friend succeed, I know great things are ahead for him.”
On Feb. 11, 2011 Anderson picked up his first ATP-level event title after winning the South Africa Tennis Open in his hometown of Johannesburg.
Weber will continue to work with Anderson up until Christmas before preparing the FGCU men’s tennis team to host the FGCU Invitational on Jan. 13-15 at the Three Oaks Tennis Complex in Estero, Fla.
