ATHENS, Ga. – The FGCU men’s tennis team finished Day One at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships hosted by the University of Georgia on Friday night.

Senior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale HS/Jacksonville University) lost in straight sets to Kennesaw State’s Louis Theodor, 6-4, 7-5. Rock played a tough second set but just couldn’t come away with the victory.

Sophomore Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) had a tough draw in No. 6 seed Kevin King from Georgia Tech who defeated Tsamas, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles play, Rock and Tsamas battled to a 9-7 loss against Stetson’s Hans Adrian Riseng and Maksim Levanovich. The doubles tandem had four match points but could not muster the final point.

“Dean played a very tough opponent today and I think he learned a lot about what he needs to do to become a better player as a result,” said head coach C.J. Weber. “Doubles was a tough loss to swallow; we had four match points and just couldn’t quite convert. We need to continue to put ourselves in position to win the match. Matt lost a heartbreaker but I’m confident he’ll bounce back.”

Results and Recaps will be available on after the tournament.
