FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale HS/Jacksonville University) and sophomore Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) will represent the FGCU men’s tennis team this weekend at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships hosted by the University of Georgia. This year’s Southeast Region event will take place from Oct. 21-24 in Athens, Ga.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players competing in each of the ITA's regions across the country over the course of the next two months. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships held at 85 different college campuses across the country.
The Eagles will have two singles competitors and one doubles team travelling to the event. In singles action on Friday, Tsamas will square off with Georgia Tech’s Kevin King, who is the No. 6 seed in the tournament, while Rock will take on Kennesaw State’s Louis Theodor at noon. In doubles, Rock and Tsamas will compete against Maksim Levanovich and Hans Adrian Riseng from Stetson at 9 a.m. on Friday.
“Regionals has always been a very special event in the fall,” said head coach C.J. Weber. “Every team in the region has the opportunity to be represented and each team sends its best players. It’s a great occasion to measure yourself up against the toughest competition of the region. I’m excited for the chance that Dean and Matt have.”
The tournament will be comprised of 15 teams, including seven teams that were ranked in the top-75 in the final 2010-11 ITA National Team Rankings. Georgia (No. 5), Florida (No. 9), Georgia Tech (No. 13), Miami (No. 27), South Florida (No. 46), Florida State (No. 47) and North Florida (No. 75) represent the seven ranked teams.
