FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast men’s tennis head coach J. Webb Horton has announced his retirement from the coaching ranks after 27 years of service (10 years at FGCU) and will become the new Assistant Director of Community Outreach in FGCU’s Office of Community Outreach effective July 15, 2011.
“We greatly appreciate all of J Webb’s contributions to our Men’s Tennis program, and the Department as a whole, over this past decade of tremendous growth,” said Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh. “In turn, in addition to knowing that he will do a wonderful job in his new role for the University, we are glad that he will also continue to serve as a terrific daily ambassador for our entire Athletics program in a number of ways.”
“I have enjoyed my 27 years as a tennis coach and my 10 years coaching at FGCU, which is one of the highlights of my career,” Horton said. “When I was presented with the opportunity to move into an administrative capacity and serve the surrounding communities, while still having a chance to be a part of FGCU Athletics, I could not pass it up. I am extremely thankful to be one of the pioneers of the FGCU athletic program.”
As the Assistant Director of Community Outreach, Horton will be working with the Office of Community Outreach’s director and staff in identifying opportunities in Southwest Florida to promote FGCU to diverse community organizations and associations. Horton will assist with facilitating, coordinating and providing assistance that links diversity perspectives and academic multicultural initiatives to the University's mission of higher education. He also will assist in campus-wide efforts to achieve enrollment and student retention diversity goals.
