Men's Tennis Drops Rainy Dual at Georgia Southern, 4-2

STATESBORO, Ga. – The FGCU men’s tennis team traveled to Statesboro, Ga. on Wednesday for a dual meeting with Georgia Southern. In the rain-shortened match, seniors Carlo Checchia (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ceteb/Coastal Carolina University) and Mitchell Lvovsky (Dania Beach, Fla./Keystone HS/Wingate University) each earned singles wins, but it wasn’t enough as the Eagles fell 4-2.

FGCU’s record moved to 2-8 (0-3 A-Sun) while Georgia Southern upped its mark to 8-6 this spring.

With rain expected in the area, the teams opened the competition with singles action. Checchia put the Eagles on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over GSU’s Edio Castanhel in the No. 4 position, and Lvovsky rounded out the scoring for the Blue and Green with a defeat of Thomas Bekkers, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 6 spot.

In three-set matches, junior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Jacksonville University) fell to Matthijs Verdam, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, in No. 2 singles, and freshman Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) was defeated by Sebastien Felt in the No. 5 contest, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5.

The teams were unable to compete in doubles play due to the weather, earning Georgia Southern the 4-2 victory.

The Eagles return to Atlantic Sun Conference play in their next two matches, traveling to the pair of duals over the weekend. The Blue and Green will head to Kennesaw State on Friday, March 11 at 10 a.m. and follow with a match at Mercer on Saturday, March 12.
