FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Atlantic Sun Conference season continues for the FGCU men’s tennis team, as it plays host to a pair of league foes at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The Eagles are set to compete against Campbell on Thursday and again on Saturday with USC Upstate, at 1 p.m. and 10 a.m., respectively.
“We are getting ready to play two very tough A-Sun opponents,” said head coach J. Webb Horton. “Campbell comes in at 6-1 and was fourth in the conference a season ago, while USC Upstate is a formidable opponent that won the regular season last year. We must play solid tennis to come away with a pair of victories.”
The Blue and Green are coming off an A-Sun opening loss to Stetson, 7-0, last Saturday. FGCU brings a 0-5 record into the dual match with Campbell.
Competing for the Eagles will be seniors Steve Binninger (St. Augustine, Fla./Saint Joseph Academy), Carlo Checchia (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ceteb/Coastal Carolina University) and Mitchell Lvovsky (Dania Beach, Fla./Keystone HS/Wingate University), junior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Jacksonville University), sophomores Collin Brown (Tallahassee, Fla./Florida State University School) and Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Columbia/Gimnasio Calibio), as well as, freshman Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS).
Campbell holds a 6-1 mark with wins over Howard (5-0), Georgetown (5-0), Liberty (5-2), UNC-Greensboro (6-1), Hampton (7-0) and Coastal Carolina (5-2), and its lone loss coming at the hands of UNC-Wilmington (6-1).
With wins over Anderson (6-1), Presbyterian (4-3), Wofford (5-2) and Texas-Pan American (4-3), USC Upstate takes its 4-9 (0-1 A-Sun) record to Stetson for the Thursday meeting.
