Sunday, January 30, 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – In the second match in as many days, the FGCU men’s tennis team was on the short end of a 6-1 result with FAMU on Sunday in Tampa, Fla. Sophomore Gabriel Echeverry (Popayan, Columbia/Gimnasio Calibio) was able to come away with a victory in the No. 4 singles position.

With the loss, the Eagles move to 0-2 on the season, while FAMU improved to 1-2.

“I thought we played better today in both singles and doubles,” said head coach J. Webb Horton. “FAMU is a top quality opponent who will make us better as we prepare for conference play. I was especially pleased with Gabriel Echeverry getting a hard fought win in the No. 4 position.”

In a well played No. 4 singles match, Echeverry picked up the Eagles lone score of the afternoon, defeating Michael Moore, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 10-7.

In No. 1 singles, FAMU’s Takura Happy turned away junior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Jacksonville University), 6-3, 6-2, and freshman Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) was defeated by Levan Clark, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. Senior Mitchell Lovovsky (Dania Beach, Fla./Keystone HS/Wingate University) fell, 6-3, 6-1, to Chidi Gabriel at No. 3, and classmate Steve Binninger (St. Augustine, Fla./Saint Joseph Academy) was issued a loss by Temura Asafu-Adjaye, 6-0, 6-4, in the No. 5 position. Sophomore Collin Brown (Tallahassee, Fla./Florida State University School) rounded out the day’s singles action at No. 6, falling to Fabrice Myrhl, 6-4, 6-4.

FAMU carried its success into doubles play, claiming the trio of matches on the afternoon. The FGCU team of Rock and Tsamas were taken down by the FAMU pair of Gabriel and Happy, 8-3, and the Eagles’ duo of Lvovsky and Echeverry were defeated by Myrhl and Asafu-Adjaye, 8-2. The closest of the three matches was played in the No. 3 spot, which saw the tandem of Binninger and Brown on the wrong side of an 8-7 (6) match with Clark and Moore.

The Eagles will be back in action when they travel to Orlando, Fla. for another set of dual matches. FGCU will face off with Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, Feb. 5 before challenging UCF on Sunday, Feb. 6.
