FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s tennis team was slotted ninth in the Atlantic Sun Conference preseason standings, as voted on by the league coaches and announced by the A-Sun office on Thursday.
“As a team I believe we have set our sights higher than where we were placed in the preseason voting,” said FGCU head coach J. Webb Horton. “Our goal is to work hard, overachieve and accomplish everything we have set out to do this spring season.”
The Eagles took the ninth spot for the second consecutive year, as did ETSU receiving the top bid. The Bucs recorded a 9-1 mark last season in conference play en route to the A-Sun Championship title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after defeating 35th-ranked Alabama, 4-2. Stetson, the A-Sun Championship runner-up, took the number two spot in the poll ahead of UNF and USC Upstate.
The Blue and Green will open the 2011 spring campaign when they travel to Tampa, Fla. for a meeting with USF on Jan. 29. Results and recaps of the event will be available at FGCUAthletics.com following the day’s competition.
