FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU head men’s tennis coach J. Webb Horton has announced the signing of Tianyu Bao (Bradenton, Fla./Bayshore HS), who ranks No. 29 in the state of Florida, to a National Letter of Intent for the 2011-12 season.
“We are really excited to sign a top in-state recruit,” said Horton. “Tianyu will bring an aggressive style of tennis which our fans will enjoy. We look for him to add depth to our singles and raise our level of doubles play.”
Bao accumulated a 16-1 singles record during his sophomore season en route to a Class 3-A District 11 singles and doubles championship and a Class 3-A State Championship semifinals appearance. His junior campaign featured a 21-1 singles record, a championship in Class 2-A District 9 singles and doubles, and a Class 2-A state singles and doubles runner-up finish. Bao, currently a senior at Bayshore High School in Bradenton, Fla., will join the Blue and Green as an incoming freshman for the 2011-12 season.
Joining Michael Beiler, Bao becomes FGCU’s second signee from the early signing period. Beiler helped Dunedin High School qualify for the state championship in singles and doubles and led them to their second District Title in school history, while earning first team All-County honors (Pinellas County).
The Eagles will return to the court for their championship season in the spring by hosting the FGCU Spring Tournament from January 7-9 at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
