GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On the second day at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships hosted by the University Florida in Gainesville, Fla., the FGCU men’s tennis team wrapped up day two with one singles match and a pair of doubles contests.
On Thursday, junior transfer Jackson Moore (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS/Georgia State) picked up a victory over Jacksonville’s Pitt Von Oertzen to advanced to the round of 64 on Friday. In a tough competition, Moore was defeated in straight sets, 1-6, 3-6, by USF’s Wael Kilani.
Shortly after Moore wrapped up singles play, the Eagles had two teams compete in the afternoon’s double action. The team of Carlo Checchia (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ceteb/Coastal Carolina) and Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Jacksonville University) fell to the FAU pair of Madon and Webb, 3-8, prior to the duo of Moore and freshman Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) defeating the tandem of Shalmi and Von Oertzen of Jacksonville, 8-3. Moore and Tsamas eventually fell to the USF team of Deridder and Kilani in their next match, 8-2.
The Eagles currently have three consolation singles matches slated for Saturday, with Rock competing against USF’s Sebastian Hagn and Tsamas facing Mercer’s Dave Barton, both at 11 a.m. Checchia will round out consolation play with a 12:15 p.m. match against FSU’s Blake Davis.
