GAINESVILLE, Fla. – As part of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships hosted by the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla., the FGCU men’s tennis team wrapped up the opening day of competition on Thursday. Junior Jackson Moore (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS/Georgia State) was victorious in his opening match at this year's four-day event.

“Overall I thought we competed pretty well today,” said FGCU head coach J. Webb Horton. "I felt that the guys battled both mentally and physically in their first real test of the year. They proved that they have the ability to be competitive, not only through the rest of this tournament, but for the remainder of the season.”

In singles action, the Eagles' day was highlighted by the play of Moore who defeated Jacksonville’s Pitt Von Oertzen, 7-6, 3-6, 6-1. Moore will face USF’s Wael Kilani in Friday’s round of 64.

Also in singles competition, junior Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Jacksonville University) fell to Hleb Maslau of North Florida, 1-6, 1-6, and Stetson’s Hans Adrian Riseng defeated freshman newcomer Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS), 3-6, 6-4, 1-6. Senior Carlo Checchia (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Ceteb/Coastal Carolina University) rounded out the FGCU competitors, falling to USF’s Federico Sabogal, 3-6, 1-6.
