TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FGCU men’s tennis team lost a pair of matches in Tallahassee on Saturday, falling to South Alabama in the morning and Georgia Southern in the afternoon. With the losses, the Eagles record drops to 0-3 on the season.
In the morning match, the Blue and Green dropped a 5-0 decision to South Alabama. Thibaud Aime (Figeac, France) played a strong match at the number one position, but ultimately lost 6-4, 7-5 to Romain Bocaert. The remaining singles matches were all straight set wins for South Alabama.
FGCU’s loss to South Alabama coupled with Georgia Southern’s 6-0 loss to No. 13 Florida State meant that the Blue and Green would take on Georgia Southern in the consolation match. FGCU played well in doubles against GSU, with Aime and Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) teaming up for an 8-4 win at the No. 1 position while the pairing of Sebastien Leitz (Nimes, France) and Mitchell Lvovsky (Dania Beach, Fla.) prevailed at the No. 2 position. With two wins in the three doubles matches, the Eagles claimed the doubles point and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Unfortunately, the singles competition was a different story. Leitz played well at No. 3, but he would lose to Gregory Bekkers 6-4, 7-5. Aime fell to Jayraj Jadeja at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-2, and all four of the other singles matches were straight set victories for Georgia Southern, giving GSU a 6-1 win.
The Eagles have two weeks to prepare for their next match, a home contest against Stetson on Saturday, February 6. The match, which will be the A-Sun opener for both teams, is set for a 10 a.m. start at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
