JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s tennis team had a strong showing in the UNF Hampton Inn 9A & Baymeadows Fall Tennis Invitational tournament this past weekend. A pair of doubles teams reached the semifinals of their respective draws, and Thibaud Aime reached the semifinals of the main back draw.
Thibaud Aime (Figeac, France) came into the tournament as the number one seed in the main singles draw, but was upset in his first match in three sets by UNF’s Hleb Maslau. In the main singles back draw, Aime advanced to the semifinals after winning a long 14-12 tiebreaker against Mercer’s Peter Tauschner.
In the main doubles draw, Aime teamed up with Matthew Rock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and advanced to the semifinals where they fell, 8-6, to the eventual main draw champions, Isaza and Weintraub from ETSU.
In the “B” doubles draw, Mitchell Lvovsky (Dania Beach, Fla.) and Carlo Checchia (Brasilia, Brazil) advanced to the semifinals before losing to UNF’s Maslau and Sotomoarino, 8-3.
Head coach J. Webb Horton was excited about his team’s performance, saying “I thought we played well overall in the singles competition and I’m very pleased with our doubles results. A lot of the other coaches were impressed with how competitive our guys were, especially Thibaud. He has a great chance to be one of the most dominant singles players in the conference this season.”
The FGCU men's tennis team will be hosting their annual Alumni Match this coming Sunday, October 18th, at 1:00 PM. The event will take place at the FGCU Tennis Complex and is free to the public.
