WINTERPARK, Fla., - The FGCU men’s tennis team competed in the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational hosted by Rollins.
Three Eagles competed in the men’s ‘A’ singles draw. FGCU’s Gonzalo Dovilla fell in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) to Gustavo Carvalho in the first round. Eruin Garibovic also fell in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) in the first round to Jon Hanna. Mikkel Muller won his first round match-up against Alex Thesleff 6-4, 7-6 (4) but fell in the second round to Brock Sakey of UCF. The men’s ‘A’ singles was not finished due to rain. In the back half of the draw, Dovilla advanced to the semifinals before falling to DJ Pate.
Steve Binninger, Frank Aciemo and Brad Henderson competed in the men’s ‘B’ draw for the Eagles. Binninger was a straight set winner in the first and second rounds, but fell in the quarterfinals to top-seeded Claudio Romano of UCF. Aciemo easily won his first round match-up with a 6-0, 6-0 win before falling in the second round. Henderson won the back draw after dropping his first round match-up.
Muller and Garibovic teamed up in the men’s doubles ‘A’ draw and advanced to the semifinals before dropping a tough 9-7 decision to Rollins’ team of Compton and Gomez.
On the ‘B’ doubles draw, FGCU entered two teams. Binninger/Acierto and Henderson/Devilla were both first round winners. However, both teams fell in the second round.
The Eagles will be in action again on October 26, when they compete in the UCF Invitational in Orlando.
