FGCU Men's Tennis Announces 2006 Schedule
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University men’s tennis coach J. Webb Horton has announced his team’s 2006 spring schedule.
The Eagles have 20 matches this spring, including 13 home matches and 10 matches against NCAA Division II Southeast Region competition. In all, 10 of the Eagles opponents are ranked in the pre-season Division II top-40.
The spring season will open on Saturday, February 4 as FGCU travels to Webber International. The Eagles will host #6 Lynn in their home opener on February 23 at the FGCU Tennis Complex. Intra-state rivals #5 Barry and #8 Rollins, as well as #3 Ouachita Baptist, will each visit FGCU this spring. Two NCAA Division I teams, Boston University and Illinois-Chicago are also on the home schedule. In addition, FGCU will travel to #2 Armstrong Atlantic State and #9 Eckerd.
“The South Region is the toughest in the nation,” said Horton, whose has posted a dual-match record of 61-21 in his first four seasons at FGCU. “At one point last year four of the top-seven teams in the country came from the South Region. We are motivated to get back into the top-10 nationally this spring.”
The Eagles, ranked 17th in the pre-season poll, finished 19-5 last year and advanced to the finals of the sub-South Region tournament.
