Osorio Wins ITA Southeast Region Championship
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The final day of the Wilson/ITA Division II Southeast Region Men’s Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University saw FGCU’s Juan Carlos Osorio capture the men’s singles title and Barry’s top seeded tandem of Thomas Hipp and Martin Jensen capture the doubles draw to advance to the National Small College Championships.
In the singles main draw final, fifth seed Osorio outlasted second seed Sebastian Niedermayer of Eckerd in two sets (6-4, 6-4) to mark the third straight year that the Eagles have won the regional title. Earlier in the day, Niedermayer knocked out Dennis Riegraf of Lynn in two sets (6-1, 6-2) to advance to the finals after reaching the semifinals a year ago.
“Juan played very well throughout the tournament and we are pleased to have him advance to the national tournament.” said FGCU tennis coach J. Webb Horton. “He had to knock three of the top-15 players in the country to win the title. And with this being the third straight year we have had the regional winner makes me very happy.
Former Eagles all-American Richard Stempnowski won the Division II Southeast Region title as a junior in Corpus Christi, Texas as a junior and defended his title as a senior on his home courts.
In the doubles draw, Hipp and Jensen won the all-Barry battle as they beat unseeded teammates Victor Rodriguez and Dirk Benninghaus 8-6 in the finals. Hipp and Jensen topped Lynn’s Jan Macko and Regnier Azevedo 8-4 in one semifinal while Rodriguez and Benninghaus eliminated Clifford Giel and Keith Kessler 8-6 in the other semifinal.
The singles and doubles champions from this weekend's tournament advance to the Oct. 13-16 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships, also to be held at FGCU.
