Men's Tennis Strong in Opening Round of ITA Southeast Regionals

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University senior Tim Offerman and junior Alberto Gutierrez won their first round singles matches at the Wilson/ITA Division II Southeast Regional Championships at the FGCU Tennis Center on Friday. Offerman (Hamburg, Germany) was a two-set winner over Preston Sneed of Carson-Newman (6-3, 6-4), while Gutierrez (Bogota, Columbia) dispatched Albin Hubscher of Rollins in two sets (6-1, 6-3). The pair joins senior teammate and fifth seed Juan Carlos Osorio (Quito, Ecuador), who drew a first round bye, in Friday’s Round of 32 play beginning at 8 a.m. today. Freshman Brad Henderson (Lithia, Fla.) lost his first round singles match to Kshitij Dwivedi of Presbyterian 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Chris Caswell (Lakeland, Fla.) fell in his opening round match, 6-1 and 6-2, to Brian Compton of Rollins. Sophomore Gavin Manders (Warwick, Bermuda) fell in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) to Justin LaFlamme of Florida Southern. The doubles teams of Osorio/Offerman, Henderson/Caswell and Gutierrez/Manders will all compete in the Round of 16 today. Osorio and Offerman topped Florida Southern’s Dusty Dixon and Greg Heartt 8-1, Henderson and Caswell won by default while Manders and Gutierrez topped Ricardo Gutierrez and Travis Bauguess of Carson-Newman 8-4. The tournament concludes on Sunday with the winners advancing to the Oct. 13-16 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships, also to be held at FGCU.
