5 Men's Tennis Players Win First Round Matches

CLINTON, S.C. - The first day of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Fall Men's Tennis Championships went without any upsets in the singles competition held at Presbyterian College and the Clinton YMCA today. Top seed Thomas Hipp of Barry University did receive a scare as he was pushed to three sets by Tusculum College's Roberto Robles, but Hipp prevailed 6-7, 7-5, 6-2. FGCU enjoyed a strong first day. Seniors Richard Stempnowski and Jose Pastrello, juniors Seth Fogelman and Tim Offerman and freshman Gavin Manders all advanced to the Round of 32 in singles play. Host school Presbyterian College had four players advance as #7 seed Hector Rincon defeated Byron Kidd of Eckerd College (6-3, 6-4), #9 seed Paul Ratchford defeated Barry University's Manuel Lauter (6-4, 7-6), Kshitij Dwivedi defeated Mars Hill College's John Allen (6-2, 6-3), and Alstair Morgan defeated Rob Elstrom of Newberry College 7-6, 6-1. Singles will continue tomorrow morning at 8:00 am.
