Eagles Come Away with Singles and Doubles Draw Titles at FGCU Spring Invite
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior Gabe Echeverry (Popayan, Colombia/ Gimnasio Calibio) cruised to the Singles Flight G title, while juniors Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) and Lance Lvovsky (Dania, Fla./ Broward Virtual School/Jacksonville) combined to win Flight B Doubles to highlight the FGCU men’s tennis team’s opening championship season weekend at its home Spring Invitational.
Featuring FGCU, USF, Tulane and The Citadel, the FGCU Spring Invitational was made up of seven singles draws of four players and three doubles draws of four teams.
Echeverry’s 2-0 weekend in Singles Flight G ended with a straight-set 6-2, 6-3 victory over USF’s Joao Souza. On Saturday, Echeverry put together a straight-set victory against Oliver Dedding of The Citadel.
Tsamas and Lvovsky’s Doubles Flight B title came via their 8-6 victory over The Citadel’s Berkabile and Pauly on Saturday. Scheduled to play in Sunday’s finale, Tsamas and Lvovsky’s opponent Rappaccioli and Van Cott of Tulane withdrew.
Over the weekend, FGCU finished with five singles wins and a pair of doubles victories, as Tsamas, sophomore Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) and sophomore Tianyu Bao’s (Tianjin, China/Bayshore HS-FL) advanced to the title in their respective singles flight.
“Today I felt like we let a couple matches slip away that we could have won,” said head coach C.J. Weber. “Overall, it was still a good weekend for us. We got to compete a lot and it will certainly help prepare us for the dual match season. I’m very happy for Gabe winning his respective flight! He’s playing the best tennis I’ve seen him play since I got here.”
FGCU will open its dual match season in Tallahassee, Fla. on Saturday, Jan. 19 when it takes on No. 32 Florida State at 10 a.m. The match against the Seminoles is part of a three-day stay in Tallahassee in which the Eagles will also face off against UAB and FAMU.
