ATHENS, Ga. – Needing a win in the play-in match to even advance to the Division II Doubles bracket, senior Colin Brown (Victoria, Texas/Memorial HS) and sophomore Michael Beiler (Palm Harbor, Fla./Dunedin HS) highlighted the start of 2012 FGCU men’s tennis fall campaign with a pair of victories at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia.

Brown and Beiler put together a dramatic 9-8(7) win over fellow Atlantic Sun foe Lipscomb duo of Oliver Strecker and John Tougher in the play-in match to make the 32 team Division II Doubles bracket. Fueled by their win earlier in the day, Brown and Beiler returned to the court just hours later and took down Georgia Tech’s team of Colin Edwards and Anish Sharma, 9-7.

With their two wins, Brown and Beiler move into Saturday’s round of 16 to face Armstrong Atlantic’s team of Jann Kononov and Pedro Scocuglia, who haven’t played a match yet due to their first round opponent withdrawing.

“I’m happy the guys got a full day of competition today,” said head coach C.J. Weber. “There is some great competition here and its great way to jump start the fall. Tomorrow we’ll look to build on the things we learned today.”

In singles action, FGCU picked up a pair of wins from sophomore Jordi Vives (Barcelona, Spain/IES Ferran Tallada/USC) and junior Dean Tsamas (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS). Seeing his first action as an Eagle after transferring to SWFL from reigning National Champion USC, Vives advanced in the Division I Single bracket with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 victory over Vanderbilt’s Jeff Offerdahl. Vives will take on Ole Miss’ Jonas Lutjen, who is the tournament’s second overall seed and ranked No. 21 in the nation, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Tsamas’ singles victory came in the Division II bracket where he also defeated a fellow A-Sun member. Squaring off against Kennesaw State’s Matthew Johnson in the opening round, Tsamas made quick work of his conference foe, winning 6-2, 6-0 to set up a matchup with Mercer’s Anderson Scarpa on Saturday at 9 a.m.
