FORT MYERS, Fla. – With its second consecutive Atlantic Sun Championship in hand, the FGCU men’s soccer team will hold an NCAA Selection Show Party on Monday beginning at 5 p.m. at Naples Flatbread at 10801 Corkscrew Road in Estero at the Miromar Outlets. The NCAA will announce its 2012 NCAA Tournament field of 48 pairings and first round sites on NCAA.com at 5:30 p.m.
FGCU earned the A-Sun’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon, as sophomore Santiago Echeverri (Kissimmee, Fla./Celebration HS) scored the golden goal against Mercer in the 95th minute of overtime sending the Eagles’ bench into a frenzied celebration.
With the win, FGCU is the only current A-Sun team to win back-to-back championships, doing so in its first two years of postseason eligibility. The Eagles, who have now equaled a program record of eight straight wins heading into the NCAA Tournament, are 11-5-2 on the year.
Echeverri gained control of the ball near the far left corner of the field and made his way toward the Bears’ goal. He weaved his way around a couple Mercer defenders and tried to chip the ball towards the middle of the field, but the ball deflected off a Mercer defender into the back of the net for the game-winning golden goal at the 94:08 mark. Echeverri was named the A-Sun Tournament MVP, joining teammates Federico Crespo (Heredia, Costa Rica/St. Paul College/Universidad Latina), Felipe DeSousa (Vila Velha, Brazil/Wharton HS) and Daniel Stanese (Pitt Meadows, British Columbia/Pitt Meadows Secondary) on the A-Sun All-Tournament team.
All first round games of the 2012 NCAA Tournament are scheduled to begin on Thursday, Nov. 11 at on-campus sites. Check back with FGCUATHLETICS.com for first-round pairings, locations, times and ticket information.
