FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the start of the 2011 season only days away, the FGCU men’s soccer team continues to collect preseason recognition. The Eagles open will open the regular season on Friday with top 25 rankings in three major collegiate soccer polls.
Aside from their top ranking of No. 14 by Goal.com, the Eagles have been slotted No. 22 according to Soccer America, No. 24 by College Soccer News, No. 42 in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Tournament 48, and were listed in the receiving votes section by the NSCAA.
In terms of individual accolades, the Green and Blue also had a pair of student-athletes earn preseason honors on the national stage. Senior midfielder Josey Portillo (Metairie, La./Grace King HS) was named a third team preseason All-American by College Soccer News, as well as, a player to watch for the MAC Hermann Trophy given to the nation’s top collegiate player. Due to his strong leadership skills and off-the-field character, senior goalkeeper Adam Glick (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley HS) was named to the initial 30-member list for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.
The Eagles were also honored by the Atlantic Sun Conference coaches, as the league voted FGCU the favorite to defend its A-Sun regular season crown in addition to the 2011 A-Sun Tournament favorite. The Green and Blue landed four student-athletes on the preseason All-Conference team, with a pair of unanimous selections in Glick and junior defenseman Deion Jones (Tampa, Fla./Freedom HS). Additionally, Glick was recognized as the conference’s preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Finishing the season with a 13-3-2 record (9-0-0 A-Sun), the Eagles finished the 2010 season ranked No. 20 nationally. The Blue and Green are set to return 20 players from last year's A-Sun regular season championship squad, including six All-Conference performers.
FGCU is set to open the 2011 campaign by taking on in-state rival FAU on Friday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. at the FGCU Soccer Complex. FGCU season tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for youth. Tickets can be purchased in-person at the FGCU Ticket Office or by calling 239-590-7145. FGCU students, faculty and staff get in free with Eagle ID.
