FORT MYERS, Fla. – No. 23 FGCU men’s soccer defender Deion Jones (Tampa, Fla./Freedom HS) added to his breakout sophomore campaign on Tuesday afternoon when he was named to the ESPN Academic All-District 3 second team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
An environmental studies major, Jones sports a cumulative 3.68 grade-point average (GPA). To be eligible for the ESPN Academic All-District team, a student-athlete must carry a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale and be either a starter or a key reserve on his or her team.
FGCU is joined in District 3 by all schools from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
Jones excelled in both the classroom and on the field as No. 23 FGCU’s starting right defender. A native of Tampa, Fla., Jones finished the 2010 campaign as the team’s leading scorer with 17 points on a team-best seven goals and three assists. Jones’ seven goals rank tied for second in the A-Sun while he also ranks second in game-winning goals (3) and tied for fifth in points.
Jones was a major factor on both ends of the field during FGCU’s 13-3-2 season that included a 9-0 conference mark and the first-ever A-Sun regular season crown in just the fourth-year in program history. Jones scored a goal in four of the nine A-Sun contests, while helping the defense post seven shutouts.
During his breakout season, Jones has been named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Team of the Week on two occasions, the College Soccer News’ National Team of the Week and the A-Sun Player of the Week on Oct. 25.
