FGCU Moves Up To No. 24 In Soccer America Poll
Tuesday, October 12, 2010
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s soccer team’s busy week of accolades continued on Tuesday with the release of Soccer America’s Top 25 poll as they earned the 24th spot in the soccer outlet’s weekly ranking. The Eagles’ ranking is a one-spot improvement over last week’s No. 25 national ranking, which was the first in program history.

The Soccer America Men's Top 25 appears in the College Reporter section on the website each Tuesday during the regular season.

In addition to the national ranking from Soccer America, FGCU earned recognition from three of the five primary collegiate soccer media outlets (NSCAA, Soccer America, College Soccer News). Sitting six votes ahead of UCF, the Blue and Green were slotted 31st in the NSCAA National Top 25 poll with 20 votes behind Penn State (58), Michigan (43), San Diego State (25), Portland (25), and Princeton (23), who all were just outside the top-25. FGCU also earned votes in College Soccer News’ Top 30, as they sit just ahead of fellow Atlantic Sun member Stetson at 39th and 40th, respectively.

Remaining unbeaten in Atlantic Sun competition (4-0) with a pair of conference shutouts last weekend, the Eagles moved up one spot into sixth place in the NSCAA South Region rankings that were unveiled on Monday afternoon. The Eagles moved past ACC member Wake Forest who previously occupied the sixth slot. FGCU turned away USC Upstate on Friday, 2-0, and took down last week’s regionally-ranked ETSU squad, 5-0, on Sunday evening en route to earning a spot on the south region poll for the fourth consecutive week and fifth time this season.

Sitting at 8-2-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the A-Sun, the Eagles are currently riding a program-best six-game winning streak. The Blue and Green’s eight wins equals their season total from all of 2009 and their current home unbeaten streak sits at nine games (8-0-1).

FGCU’s recent program-best three-game shutout streak has also seen the offense come alive, as the Eagles have scored nine goals over the last three contests. Through four A-Sun contests, the Blue and Green have given up just one goal while scoring 11.

The No. 24 Eagles will be back in action when they close out the road portion of the 2010 schedule. The Blue and Green will begin by heading to Buies Creek, N.C. to face Campbell (4-3-4, 2-1) on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. FGCU will then head south to Georgia to square off against Mercer (6-3-1, 1-2) on Saturday, Oct. 16 in another 7 p.m. kick-off.
