Men's Soccer to Host FIU on Friday Evening
FORT MYERS, Fla. – In its final tune-up before hitting conference play, the FGCU men’s soccer team will kick off with FIU on Friday at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The two regionally ranked schools each bring a conference Player of the Week goalkeeper into the 7 p.m. contest.
Following the 1-1 draw with Drexel (Sept. 16) and a thrilling 1-0 shutout of No. 5-ranked Ohio State (Sept. 18) in front of a record setting home crowd of 1,322 at the Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic, the Eagles moved into the seventh spot in the South Regional rankings. It marks the second time FGCU has appeared in the top 10 in the regional rankings this season. Meanwhile, FIU makes its third straight appearance in the South Region voting with its number five ranking in this week’s poll.
The win over No.5-ranked Ohio State improved FGCU’s record to 3-2-2 on the season. The Eagles have now defeated two ranked BCS opponents in 2010, with the other coming in the 2-1 season opening road victory over then-No. 13 USF. The win snapped the Bulls 30-game (26-0-4) home unbeaten streak dating back to Sept. 21, 2007 against UCONN (L, 2-1).
For his brick wall defensive efforts in goal, redshirt junior goalkeeper Adam Glick (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley HS) picked up his fourth career Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor. Glick’s diving deflection on a Drexel penalty kick in the 107th minute of double-overtime helped FGCU fend off a heart-breaking loss and hold on for a 1-1 tie against the visiting Dragons Thursday night. On Saturday, Glick tallied four saves to pick up his 17th career victory in net and 10th career shutout over No.5-ranked Ohio State in front of the record-setting crowd at the FGCU Soccer Complex. His hard work in the two matches earned the net-minder an All-Tournament team selection. Starting all seven games in net with two shutouts to his name, Glick has recorded 30 saves and a 0.78 goals against average after playing just under 690 minutes in goal on the season.
Freshman forward Ryan Price (Melbourne Beach, Fla./Melbourne HS) also earned recognition from the A-Sun, picking up honorable mention for his play over the weekend. Named to the All-Tournament team, the newcomer netted the Eagles’ game-winning goal on an assist from fellow classmate Donovan Henry (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas HS) in the 64th minute of competition to take the 1-0 victory over the nationally ranked Buckeyes.
Sophomore midfielder Deion Jones (Tampa, Fla./Freedom HS) continues to lead the Blue and Green with five points on two goals and an assist, with Price’s four points on two goals not far behind. Additionally, junior Cristian Raudales (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) and senior Matthew O’Shaughnessy (Trinity, Fla./Mitchell HS) each claim a goal on the season for the Eagles.
Following a 2-1 win over Jacksonville and a 1-0 shutout of Stetson, the Golden Panthers bring their 4-2 record to the friendly confines of the FGCU Soccer Complex. The undefeated weekend earned FIU’s senior goalkeeper Shane Lopez his first-career Conference USA Player of the Week honor after tallying 12 saves and helping FIU to its first back-to-back wins of the season. Netting multiple goals on the year for the Golden Panthers, Michael Muehseler leads the team with eight points off four goals and Nicolas Rodriguez’s six points come from a trio of netted shots.
