FORT MYERS, Fla. – In the most recent edition of the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com Rankings, the FGCU men’s soccer team was slotted seventh in the South Region. This marks the second time this season the Eagles have appeared in the top 10 in the regional rankings.
After opening the season 2-0, the Blue and Green were tabbed fifth in the South Region in the first regular season poll of the 2010 campaign (Sept. 7). Following the draw with Drexel and the thrilling 1-0 shutout of No. 5-ranked Ohio State at the Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic last week, the Eagles moved into the seventh spot in the South Regional rankings.
The top three teams in the South Region have remained the same through the three polls this season with North Carolina claiming the top spot, followed by Duke and Wake Forest. Also ahead of the Eagles on this week’s list is Davidson at number four, with South Carolina and FIU in a share of fifth.
The win over No.5-ranked Ohio State improved FGCU’s record to 3-2-2. The Eagles have now defeated two ranked BCS opponents this season, with the other coming in the 2-1 season opening road victory over then-No. 13 USF that snapped the Bulls 30-game (26-0-4) home unbeaten streak dating back to Sept. 21, 2007 against UCONN (L, 2-1).
For his defensive efforts in goal at the Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic, redshirt junior goalkeeper Adam Glick (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley HS) earned his fourth career Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor. Glick had a great weekend, notching a couple of game-changing saves in 200 minutes of play over the two contests. The Leola, Pa. native's diving deflection on a Drexel penalty kick in the 107th minute of double-overtime helped FGCU fend off a heart-breaking loss and hold on for a 1-1 tie against the visiting Dragons Thursday night. On Saturday, Glick tallied four saves to pick up his 17th career victory in net and 10th career shutout over No.5-ranked Ohio State in front of a record-setting crowd of 1322 at the FGCU Soccer Complex. His hard work in the two matches earned the net-minder an All-Tournament team selection.
Also earning recognition from the A-Sun, freshman forward Ryan Price (Melbourne Beach, Fla./Melbourne HS) picked up honorable mention for his play over the weekend. The newcomer netted the Eagles’ game-winning goal in the 64th minute of competition to take the 1-0 victory over the nationally ranked Buckeyes.
The Eagles land back at home for a Friday night clash with the FIU Golden Panthers on Sept. 24 at the FGCU Soccer Complex, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
