Jones Picks-up Second National Team of Week Honor
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Recording five points on two goals and an assist in the opening two contests, FGCU men’s soccer sophomore Deion Jones (Tampa, Fla./Freedom HS) has certainly provided an offensive spark for the Eagles on the pitch. For his stellar play to open the season, College Soccer News joins the list of media outlets naming Jones to their National Team of the Week.
The selection by College Soccer News comes a day after Jones was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Team of the Week.
Jones’ five points are a team-best and three more than his total from 2009. The second-year midfielder became the first player in program history to tally a goal in the opening two games of the season and has had a hand in three of the team’s four goals on the season.
A native of Tampa, Fla., Jones enjoyed a big homecoming in front of family and friends during FGCU’s 2-1 win at No. 13 USF last Wednesday. Jones helped get the Eagles on the board with an assist on the first goal and then tallied the eventual game-winning goal in the 60th minute. The win was the program’s first over a ranked opponent and ended the Bulls’ 30-game home unbeaten streak (26-0-4).
This past weekend at the Richmond Classic, Jones made his way onto the All-Tournament team after leading the Blue and Green to a 1-1 record. Jones scored the equalizer in Friday’s game against host VCU, a match the Eagles would go on to win, 2-1, in the final seconds of double overtime.
Jones’ TopDrawerSoccer.com honor came on the same day FGCU earned a No. 5 ranking in the NSCAA South Region poll, while the College Soccer News recognition falls on the same day which the Eagles received 23 votes in the NSCAA/adidas Division I Top 25 Rankings.
This weekend, the Eagles take their 2-1 record to the Marquette Invitational. FGCU will open the tournament on Friday, Sept. 10 at 8:05 p.m. against the host Golden Eagles.
