BRADENTON, Fla. – The FGCU men’s soccer team competed in the second match of the spring season on Friday afternoon against Major League Soccer’s D.C. United at IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla. The Eagles allowed only one goal in the 90 minute match against D.C. United’s first team.
“Obviously we were outclassed in the sense of talent,” said head coach Bob Butehorn, “but it was a great experience for our young group of guys to compete against a high caliber MLS squad. The team gave a great effort and this learning experience was a real positive for our three year old program.”
“There was a clear maturity difference between the professional players and our young collegiate players but we were focused more on the experience, than the outcome of the match. We are thankful that D.C. United gave us this opportunity and we are hopeful that similar opportunities will arise like this in the future.”
The lone goal of the match was scored when a D.C. United midfielder served the ball from the left side of the field into the box and United’s center forward sent the ball into the back of net off a header.
The Eagles land back at home for another exhibition match on Saturday, March 20th at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The match is set for kickoff at 4:00 pm.
