FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s soccer team got their second conference win of the season with a 4-0 defeat of Belmont at the FGCU Soccer Complex on Friday evening. Sophomore Manuel Gonzalez earned his first two goals of the season in the victory.
With the win, FGCU improves to 4-5-1 on the year with a 2-1-0 record in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Belmont moves to 1-9-1 on the season and is 0-3-0 in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
"I am very pleased with our overall effort tonight," said head coach Bob Butehorn. "The guys executed the game plan very well. We're looking forward to playing Lipscomb on Sunday. The players and staff appreciate the fans that withstood the rain and supported our team."
The Eagles got on the board in the 40th minute when Sophomore Cristian Raudales (Bradenton, Fla.) scored his fourth goal of the season, putting the ball in the net off a deflected save by Belmont keeper Lou Manning.
At the conclusion of the first half, FGCU won the shot battle 6-1 and sustained the 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.
The Eagles would add to the lead in the 54th minute, as Tyler Sharpe (Merritt Island, Fla.) scored his second goal of the year on an assist from Raudales.
FGCU would score again in the 80th minute as Gonzalez (Pompano Beach, Fla.) sent a shot into the back of the net from the top of the box on a great assist from Freshman Andres Navas (Miami, Fla.).
In the 88th minute, the Eagles would find the back of the net once more as Gonzalez earned his second goal of the evening by getting another shot past the Belmont keeper.
FGCU recorded 14 shots, with nine shots on goal, and seven corner kicks on the evening.
Belmont registered four shots, with two shots on goal, and two corners in the outing.
The FGCU men’s soccer team will take the field again this weekend as they host the Bisons of Lipscomb University on Sunday at the FGCU Soccer Complex at 2 p.m.
