FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU men’s soccer team is set to commence its third season of play Tuesday, Aug. 18, when the Eagles host the Mocs of Florida Southern in an exhibition match at 6 p.m. at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
Head coach Bob Butehorn is back for his third year at the helm of the men’s program, having guided the Eagles to a 14-20-3 record in his first two seasons. The 2008 FGCU squad finished with an overall record of 6-10-2 and placed seventh in the A-Sun with a 3-5-1 league ledger.
The Eagles return 17 letterwinners and all 11 starters from a 2008 squad. The team also brings 11 newcomers into the fold. Coach Butehorn has six juniors, 12 sophomores, and 10 freshmen on the 28-man roster.
FGCU will be led by sophomore forward Scott Harrison (Cocoa, Fla.), an Atlantic Sun All-Freshman selection who had a team-high six goals, five assists, and 17 points in 2008. Also bolstering the Eagles attack will be sophomore midfielder and 2008 A-Sun All-Freshman selection Francesco DiStefano (Kissimmee, Fla.), who chipped in six goals and three assists last season and started 14 games in his freshman campaign. Sophomore midfielders Cristian Raudales (Bradenton, Fla.) and Manuel Gonzalez (Pompano Beach, Fla.) added three goals each in their first season wearing the blue and green.
Florida Southern is coming off a 3-12 record last season and has a team full of new faces. Of the 27 players on the Mocs roster, only 12 played for Florida Southern in 2008.
FGCU will play its second and final exhibition game Saturday, Aug. 22 at home against Eckerd College at 6 p.m. The Eagles open the regular season Sept. 1 at FIU at 7 p.m.
