FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU men’s soccer team opened its spring season on Saturday, coming away with a decisive 3-1 victory over visiting St. Leo.
The game started a bit slow as both teams got their bearings, but FGCU began to move the ball well and create quality chances after the first 10 minutes. Scotty Harrison (Cocoa, Fla.) continued the scoring trend he began in the fall by picking up the game’s first goal before halftime on a feed from fellow striker Matt O’Shaughnessy (Trinity, Fla.). Francesco DiStefano (Kissimmee, Fla.) finished a cross from Harrison to give the Eagles a 2-0 cushion early in the second half. After the St. Leo goalkeeper made a tremendous save on a shot from O’Shaughnessy, Manny Gonzalez (Pompano Beach, Fla.) capped the FGCU scoring with a scorcher to the far corner on the ensuing corner kick. St. Leo managed to steal one against the run of play, but the damage had been done and the 3-1 score held.
The Eagles will be at home again on Sunday, March 8 in a series of short exhibition games against Notre Dame, Stetson and Webber International. The schedule for Sunday’s action is below, and there is no admission charge for the games.
