FGCU Men's Soccer Begins Work with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Boys and Girls Club

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU men’s soccer team has begun working with both the Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Boys and Girls Club programs of Southwest Florida. This brand new partnership, designed with the team in mind, is an after school mentoring program in the Hispanic community of Pueblo Bonito in Bonita Springs, FL.

During the 2007-08 school year, the FGCU men’s soccer team worked with a Big Brothers/Big Sisters program called Bigs in Schools. Each student-athlete was matched with an elementary school student and met with him once a week to work on reading, math and writing, as well as learn about teamwork, discipline, respect and hard work. This new program has been created with the same concept in mind, but instead of only mentoring in a classroom setting, the FGCU men’s soccer players are able to spend time with their Littles playing games, working on puzzles and participating in the neighborhood’s favorite pastime … pick-up soccer games!

In a neighborhood in which drugs, alcohol and gangs are temptations for young boys and girls, the FGCU men’s soccer team is excited to work hand-in-hand with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Boys and Girls Club, who has already done an unbelievable job in the Pueblo Bonito community.
