DeLand, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer team dropped its first A-Sun Conference game of the season to Stetson, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles fall to 5-5-1 (1-1-1 A-Sun) while the Hatters improve to 6-3-0 (2-1-0 A-Sun).
The Hatters, who are ranked seventh in the NSCAA/adidas South Region, took the lead on Eugene Starikov’s goal in the 28th minute.
Starikov received a long pass from Richard Porteous and dribbled around FGCU keeper, Adam Glick (Leola, Pa.) for the score. Starikov’s goal would be the lone goal of the period as the Hatters took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Stetson outshot the Eagles 8-1, while FGCU won the first period corner kick battle 4-1.
The Eagles would strike first in the second period and tie the score at 1-1 when Koshko (New Port Richey, Fla.) scored his third goal of the season in the 62nd minute off of a penalty kick. The game would be played tight for the next 20 minutes and looked as if it would eventually head into overtime, but in the 83rd minute Griffin Gilstrap scored his first goal of the season, which would also be the eventual game-winning goal, off an assist from Tanner Wolfe.
FGCU starting keeper Adam Glick recorded three saves while surrendering two goals in 90 minutes between the pipes. FGCU was outshot by Stetson 18-3. FGCU had six corner kicks while Stetson earned three. The Hatters committed 11 fouls and had no cards while the Eagles committed 14 fouls and had three yellow cards.
