MURRELLS Inlet, S.C. – Junior Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) fired an even-par 72 to finish 13th individually while the FGCU men’s golf team finished in a tie for seventh overall at the competitive General Hackler Championship hosted by Coastal Carolina on Tuesday at the TPC of Myrtle Beach.

Cote was FGCU’s low-man in two of the three rounds, carding a 75-75-72(E)/222 to move up three spots on the final day into 13th place. His 72 was the sixth-lowest round of the day and he finished as one of just three players in the field to play the par 3s at under-par (-1). Cote made six of his team-high 11 birdies in the final round, including four in his final eight holes.

As a team, the Eagles tied for seventh with Gardner-Webb with a 308-304-312/924. No. 17 Arkansas (283(-5)-299-291/873) lost its two-stroke lead entering the final day, but did tie with No. 23 Kent State (296-288(E)-289/873) for first place. No. 29 Tennessee (289-300-291/880) finished third, while host No. 48 Coastal Carolina (295-310-287(-1)/892) and A-Sun member ETSU (299-308-291/898) rounded out the top five.

Junior Mathias Boesmans’ (Belgium/Western Texas College) day started with a two-under 34 on the back nine, as he ended the day with a two-over 74. Boesmans moved up five spots into a tie for 30th with a 76-80-74/230 scorecard. Freshman Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) tied for 52nd (76-85-80/241), while junior Jesse Lowe (Fort Myers, Fla./Gateway Christian HS) finished 54th (81-75-86/242) and sophomore Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) followed in 55th (81-74-88/243).

The Eagles played the last two tournaments without freshman Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann), who participated in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open. Through six tournaments played this season, Figueroa sports a team-low 72.9 stroke average with four top 20s and medalist honors at the Cobra-PUMA Invitational.

FGCU will be back in action on Friday, March 29 when it opens play at the three-day FAU Invitational.
